Day 3 - Boyana & Vitiosha Mountain

After breakfast we took a taxi to a small town south west of Sofia called Boyana.  This falls within the city of Sofia but is situated at the foot of Mount Vitosha.  We first had a walk around the grounds of Boyana Church, a tiny 13th century church set in woodlands.  We then attempted to find the path to Boyana Waterfall but even after asking a few people for directions, after 45 minutes we found ourselves on the wrong path.  This had been a pleasant woodland walk with only gentle hills and not the climb into the mountains that we had expected.  We made our way back to the town and found the correct path and proceeded to go towards Boyana Lake and Waterfall.   It was incredibly steep and a very difficult climb.  We found the lake and sat on a log and had something to eat.  We saw some tadpoles and frogs in the lake but nothing else.  We set off for the waterfall but were faced with a very steep climb.  It was very hot and the waterfall was at least another hour away so we decide and to turn back.  The descent was almost as bad as the climb and quite dangerous in places.  We had an ice cream and decided to get a taxi back to the hotel to freshen up before heading back to the city.

After a shower and short rest we took a last walk into Sofia and did a bit of last minute shopping.  We stopped at a café in the park for a drink and just as we were leaving there was some Bulgarian traditional dancing taking place in the park.  We watched it for quite a while but it looked like it was going on into the night so went and found somewhere to eat before heading back to the hotel to pack ready to leave for Plovdiv early tomorrow.
